Grade 8

The eighth grade teachers will focus on meaningful student learning experiences which accommodate individual differences and foster successes as middle school students, lifelong learners and members of the community.

Supporting Goals

1. Accept the worth of each individual, strengths and weaknesses.

2. Encourage self-respect, understanding and tolerance of each individual’s rights and beliefs

3. Encourage the development of thinking skills or strategies that empower students to solve problems.

4. Reinforce skills through individualizes instruction so that students become responsible, independent, self-directed learners.

5. Provide for the physical and social development of each individual.

COMMUNICATION ARTS
The Communication Arts department has structured their program to include 5 strands of English: Reading/Literature, Writing, Oral Language, Research and Inquiry and Media and Technology.

MATH
The math department has chosen the Connected Mathematics Series which addresses four mathematical strands: numeration, geometry and measurement, algebra and statistics and probability. On the CMP parent web site, you can learn more about the mathematical goals of each unit. You can also see an illustrated vocabulary list and examine solutions of selected ACE problems.

SCIENCE
The 8th grade science course offered at Parkview is physical science. The year is divided into the study of chemistry and physics. The inquiry based approach engages the middle school student and encourages the natural curiosity they possess. Direct instruction, hands on experiments, and projects encourage the learner to develop their critical thinking skills as well as the problem solving skills they will need to succeed in the future.
